an honest comparison

Tansy vs Obsidian

Obsidian and Tansy agree on the big thing: your notes should be files on your own device, not rows in someone's database. Obsidian does it with plain Markdown, a huge plugin community and a free personal licence. Tansy does it with rich files: handwritten notebooks, planners, canvases, scripts, sheet music and flashcards, linked the same way.

Pick Obsidian if…

  • You want plain-text Markdown you can open in any editor forever.
  • You want it free, and you like extending your tools with community plugins.
  • You mostly type, and a graph of links is how you think.

Pick Tansy if…

  • You handwrite, draw or plan on paper-like pages, and want that to be first-class.
  • You want one app that opens the box: no plugins to find, install and maintain.
  • You want planners, flashcards, music notation or scripts without stitching tools together.
